How to get rid of forehead lines

By Dr. TRACY MOUNTFORD, MBBS MBCAM

Forehead lines and wrinkles are the horizontal lines that you may see running across your forehead. They first start to appear around the age of 20-30 and are just a typical sign of ageing that is common in the majority of people.

What causes forehead lines?

The most common cause of forehead wrinkles is ageing and there is not a lot we can do to prevent that. As we age, collagen and the elasticity in our skin reduces which causes lines and wrinkles to appear.

You may wonder why some people have more visible forehead lines than other and this is often down to them being more expressive and using the muscles in this area a lot more which depending on the anatomy can make some people a lot more susceptible to developing these lines sooner than others.

Other factors that can accelerate the formation of forehead wrinkles include:

  • Smoking
  • Sun Exposure
  • Dehydrated Skin
  • Frequent Alcohol Consumption

How to get rid of forehead wrinkles?

The best treatment for forehead wrinkles will depend on your age and the severity of your forehead lines.

Forehead wrinkles at 20

It is not uncommon for forehead wrinkles to appear in your 20s. In this instance the lines are likely to be mild and a more preventive treatment may be best suited such as microneedling which works to smoothen forehead lines by causing micro damage to the skin which stimulates natural fresh collagen production to renew the skin leaving fresh and glowing skin post treatment.

Anti-wrinkle injections are the most common treatment for forehead lines but for someone in their 20s a slightly different approach may be more appropriate as the lines are not likely to be as deep set as someone who is older, so a lot less is required

A good skincare routine can also help to ensure that your skin is being well cared for to help prevent early signs of ageing.

Forehead wrinkles at 30

We see many patients in their 30s visiting our clinic for the first time with concerns about the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Anti-wrinkle injections are likely to be the favoured treatment, but our skin specialists may also recommend treatments to help treat the skin as a whole such as Ultherapy. Ultherapy is a really effective treatment for those who are in their late 30s to help tighten and smooth the skin on the forehead whilst also stimulating the natural production of collagen.

Forehead wrinkles at 40

As we reach 40 and beyond, we need to start looking at our skin as a whole. It is likely that by this time, lines and wrinkles have started to form in other areas such as around the eyes and lower face.

Anti-wrinkles injections of course are a great treatment for quick results but by considering other treatments such as Ultherapy or Thermage a well you will be encouraging your body’s own ability to regenerate natural collagen proteins.  This will help to improve the overall quality of the skin and  can help to make the results of anti-wrinkle injection treatment more long-lasting.

Forehead wrinkles at 50

If you are seeking forehead wrinkles treatment in your 50s for the first time, it is likely that the wrinkles are going to be deep forehead wrinkles which may need a course of treatment to treat.

Anti-wrinkle injections will help to reduce the appearance of lines, but additional dermal filler treatment may also be recommended to help fill the lines which can help you to achieve a better result.

In some instances, you may want to consider a non surgical facelift treatment plan which could include a combination of treatments such as anti wrinkle injections, thread lift, Ultherapy, dermal fillers and collagen stimulators. A non surgical facelift can give great results for the entire face, not just forehead wrinkles, without the need for surgical procedures which often involves downtime and general anaesthetic.
