How to treat Tech Neck Lines?

By Dr. TRACY MOUNTFORD, MBBS MBCAM

The neck is often a forgotten part of our skincare regimes with all the focus going on our face and maybe some remnants being shared down to our neck and decolletage. This means there is no surprise that the neck can be one of the biggest giveaways to age.

More recently however, patients complaining of neck lines and wrinkles have been a lot younger and this is due to a new condition titled ‘tech neck’.

What is tech neck

Tech neck is not actually anything new and simply refers to prominent lines and wrinkles on the neck. Previously these were often referred to as necklace lines and appear as horizontal lines that run over the neck.

What causes tech neck lines or tech neck wrinkles?

Neck lines are a sign of ageing and are often caused because of a decrease in collagen and elastin production in the skin. In more recent times, these lines are becoming prominent a lot sooner due to the positioning of looking down at our phones or tablets for long periods of time.

Other lifestyle factors that can contribute to tech neck wrinkles include:

  • Sun damage
  • Smoking
  • Weight loss or gain
  • Hormonal changes
  • Sleeping positions

How to treat tech neck lines?

Dermal Fillers for tech neck lines

Dermal fillers are a great option for tech neck lines treatment. Hyaluronic acid fillers are really effective at filling fine lines and wrinkles whilst also adding volume to sunken areas. Dermal filler is injected into the neck lines which fills them and makes them less noticeable. The best results from dermal neck filler treatment are seen after 2-3 weeks once the filler has had time to settle.

Profhilo for tech neck wrinkles

Profhilo is another great treatment for tech neck lines. Profhilo is the only injectable treatment available that reverses the reduction in skin laxity by actively stimulating collagen and elastin production. The unique bio remodelling injectable treatment uses a 100% hyaluronic acid solution which does not add any volume to the area like dermal filler would meaning the results are more subtle however, the neck skin is treated as a whole improving hydration, skin tone and texture which will hopefully offer more long-lasting results.

Ultherapy for tech neck lines

Ultherapy is the only FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment for lifting the skin on the neck. The treatment uses ultrasound technology to gradually strengthen existing collagen within the skin whilst also encouraging new collagen production resulting in lifted and tighter skin which is great for reducing the appearance of neck lines and wrinkles.

Anti-Wrinkle Injection for tech neck lines

Anti-wrinkle injections are a botulinum toxin injection that works to relax muscles that are causing fine lines and wrinkles. It can be used on the neck to help soften fine lines, but deeper tech neck wrinkles may need additional treatment for the best results.

Thread lift for tech neck lines

Silhouette soft thread lifting treatment is great for rejuvenating the entire neck helping to stimulate the body to produce collagen, whilst also providing lift and support for any skin laxity that may be making tech neck lines and wrinkles more prominent. We would recommend this treatment for more severe tech neck lines that have not improved with alternative treatments.

How to avoid tech neck?

There are lots of ways you can avoid getting tech neck which includes:

  • Maintaining good posture
  • Keeping skin protected from the sun
  • Staying hydrated and
  • Ensuring your neck is in a neutral position when sleeping.

Overall however, neck lines and wrinkles are just a symptom of ageing but following our advice above can help to reduce their severity and early development.
