Can I have CoolSculpting if I have a pacemaker? A brief guide to safety concerns about this process

By Dr. TRACY MOUNTFORD, MBBS MBCAM

When undertaking any kind of cosmetic treatment, you will want reassurance that the process is safe, regulated and that any machinery that is used has undergone extensive testing.

Of course, this becomes more pressing when the procedure that you are planning to undertake soon uses a machine and, if you are unfamiliar with the design, shape or noises that the machine makes, you may be less than willing to let our team use it on you.

When it comes to a treatment like CoolSculpting in London, the machine that we use at The Cosmetic Skin Clinic, the CoolTone device, is a specialised vacuum, designed to target areas of stubborn fat, to freeze the cells and allow your body to break them down naturally. Simple, effective and very time-efficient.

But, are there safety procedures surrounding CoolSculpting in London? Can the CoolTone device be used on areas that have tattoos, piercings or other skin augmentations? Read on to find out!

How CoolSculpting works?

FDA approved for the removal of stubborn fat cells, the CoolTone device that we use for CoolSculpting in London is a powerful and efficient piece of machinery.

Designed to cool targeted areas of fat cells to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, this machine kills fat cells by means of freezing, allowing the body to naturally dispose of them over the coming weeks and months.

This machine is designed for use in almost every area of the body, including the abdomen, the back, the thighs, the arms, and even the buttocks!

Be aware, however, that while the CoolTone device removes stubborn fat, it is not designed as a weight-loss technique and should not be used or advertised as one. It helps to create a more toned and chiselled version of the targeted area and is not designed to help you lose weight.

Are you a suitable patient for CoolSculpting?

Our team will advise you on the suitability of this treatment during your initial consultation with us at The Cosmetic Skin Clinic.

Due to the cooling process that the CoolTone device uses, it is not suitable for use on people who have had any recent surgeries in the target area, who have a hernia or have any known serious allergies or extreme sensitivities.

Similarly, if you suffer from cold agglutinin disease, cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria, you should not undertake this treatment.

If you have any concerns about pre-existing medical conditions, please discuss them with your doctor and our team before having this treatment performed.

CoolSculpting and Pacemakers, implants, and other subcutaneous devices

Similarly, there are restrictions on using the CoolTone device if you have certain fitted medical devices.

If you have metal, electronic or electrical devices or implants, such as a pacemaker, an implanted defibrillator, a hearing device or a neurostimulator, then you are not suited for treatment with the CoolTone device.

In the event of implanted drug pumps, colostomy bags or subcutaneous contraceptive implants, it is unlikely that treatment with the CoolTone device will be safe.
