What Does Your Smile Say About You?

A smile can speak a thousand words, so what does yours say about you?

                                   by Dr Tracy Mountford

Dr Mountford of The Cosmetic Skin Clinic is the non-surgical expert for Fabafterfifty and was invited by Allergan (makers of the Juvederm range of products) to impart her knowledge on the ideal lip enhancement for women over 50 to avoid lips looking overblown and out of proportion:

Our smile is the mirror of our personality. It expresses what we think, how we feel and how we are perceived in the world. A radiant smile has long been seen as a symbol of natural beauty and although most people use theirs simply to appear happy or friendly, many will also admit to using it for personal benefit!

Allergan, the makers of the JUVÉDERM® ULTRA SMILE, recently conducted a European survey which turned up some fascinating findings. The EUROPEAN SMILE survey discovered that over half of UK adults will deliberately charm people with their smile in order to request a favour; with almost 20% turning on a winning smile to get money off a bill and close to three quarters taking advantage of their grin to sneakily get away with something! Many also owned up to utilising a great smile to get ahead at work and perhaps not unsurprisingly, to attract a partner. (1)

Lip shrinkage begins between ages of 30 and 40

A key component of any winning smile is the lips. However, some women worry that their lips let their smile down.  Lip shrinkage begins between the ages of thirty and forty(2) which may account for why 14% of women from the EUROPEAN SMILE survey aged over forty-five cited their lips as the main reason for disliking their smile.

Women who have full lips look younger than they really are

1. Research reveals that women who have full, firm lips look much younger than they really are

2. Even if a woman develops wrinkles and begins to grey, plumper lips can make all the difference.

Genes are generally the reason why lips either stay firm or become shrivelled, but external causes like sun damage and smoking also play a role. In order to help lips regain their youthful plumpness, cosmetic lip enhancement can be an effective solution for creating lips that are soft, sensuous and in harmony with your looks.

Refer to old photographs to see how face has aged

To achieve a pout which complements your age, face, manner and style, a great aesthetics practitioner will take the time to carefully analyse a patient’s face shape, balance of features and how the face has aged, often even referring to old photographs.

Dr Tracy Mountford says “Lip enhancement needs to deliver lips that suit the rest of a person’s facial features, which is why I prefer to take the ‘less is more’ approach. For excellent results I use JUVÉDERM® ULTRA SMILE which is specifically designed for treatment of the lip area. It contains lidocaine, an anaesthetic, which gives my patients a more comfortable injection experience’.

After Juvederm Ultra Smile

JUVÉDERM® ULTRA SMILE is administered in small doses by intradermal injection directly into the lips, temporarily improving volume and smoothness, and re-shaping to give a natural fullness and feel. In fact, recent studies have demonstrated that 97% of patients agree JUVÉDERM® ULTRA SMILE gave natural looking lips (1), and 91% of patients are satisfied with the results.(2)

So next time you flash your smile, make sure it represents who you are inside. Do it with confidence, radiate happiness and aim to put a smile on everyone else’s face.
